The Stuttering Lab
at the University of Iowa
It’s so much more than a speech pattern.Stutterer-Centered Science
In our lab, we are dedicated to understanding the full human experience of stuttering; not just the way someone talks, but the identity, relationships, and emotional life that surround it. Our research centers people who stutter at its core, investigating how these experiences are shaped by individual differences and the various contexts people move through, from everyday conversations to the therapy room.
Our work is rooted in research, yet our purpose reaches further. We strive to translate what we learn into resources for folks who stutter and their families, allies, and clinicians who support them.
Going Beyond the Lab
A Note for Folks Who Stutter
We see you. We know that stuttering can be exhausting because of the anticipation, the fear, the moments of feeling invisible or misunderstood. The weight of a life organized around stuttering. These experiences are real, and they matter. We also know that something can shift. It can be revolutionary when a person who stutters begins to move toward their stuttering rather than retreating from it. To claim their identity, their stuttered voice, and their worth in the world. You are not alone in that journey. Our lab exists because we believe that people who stutter deserve a world that makes more room for them. And we believe that when people who stutter, researchers, clinicians, and allies band together, we can build it.
